Welcome to the second day of A Week of Zero Waste DIY Challenge: Beauty Edition!! Happy random Tuesday. If you missed yesterday that is A-OK, just check out MONDAY -DIY Soothing Detox Face Mask. or start off with today, don’t matta!
DIY Lip Balm. It’s a great way to introduce a reduced plastic and chemical product lifestyle because this lip balm recipe is easy, small-batch, moisturizing, useful, natural and zero waste. Yay, lets get started, DIY is fun!
What you need
- 1/2 teaspoon Shea butter
- 1 teaspoon averagely packed Beeswax (I finely grate mine from a block)
- 1 teaspoon Coconut oil
- 10 drops total of 1-2 “other” oils: Carrot seed, Grapeseed, apricot, jojoba, argon, carrot seed, vit E oil etc.
- 3-4 drops Essential oil (optional)
- Tiny, cute, reusable container
I haven’t needed lip balm for a while because I haven’t used any or bought any. But when seasons change and winter dryness comes and/or the summer rays hit, I need something on my smackers. The store bought icky, chemical stuff comes in plastic! Depending on your skin type, climate etc it can be an essential product in your daily beauty routine. So I found the little pill tin in the photo for $1.15 at Natural Grocers, but you can use an old, emptied and cleaned chapstick tube, tiny sampler jelly jar, mint tin, glass mini pot make-up container etc. Get creative, that’s the fun part!
Melt coconut oil, Shea butter, beeswax and other oils via double broiler. My bootleg double broiler (skillet with water & a glass measuring cup on top of a mason jar lid ring). Take off heat, drop in 3-4 drops of essential oils of your choosing (I did peppermint yum). Pour into container almost immediately. Let sit to harden and enjoy!
TIP: Use a little more beeswax in the warmer months and use a little less in winter so it doesn’t get too melty or too hard.
Disclaimer: I am not an essential oil expert but I have fun with them, you should too, but follow their warning labels 🙂
